Yarra Valley: Zonzo & Yering Station

Monday, September 05, 2016tee

Finally it's September and the spring season has officially begun! It's time to start planning for weekend daytrips just to get away and explore for the weekend. This weekend's special as it's my birthday weekend and Father's Day weekend. I wanted to go out and try something different and J, the ever-supportive hubster, was game! Yarra Valley has been a constant go-to as it's just barely an hour's drive away and the view is amazing! Plus, wine. It couldn't get any better than that.

I was a bit hesitant as it's been raining the past few days, but God gave us a beautiful, sunny and warm day to enjoy our day out. Woohoo!

Much have been said about Zonzo and it had my hopes up. Built on old train tracks, the estate provides a picturesque view of the Yarra Valley and a picture-perfect venue for weddings and events. We were seated outside in communal tables, immediately giving a relaxed vibe, just like weekends should be.

The scenery was breath-taking, little man had lots of space to run around and he sure took advantage of this! Man, this guy can run! But seriously, ever since I became a parent, I've been looking around for "kid-friendly" places to dine - constrained and tight spaces tend to work against us especially when we're with a pram and it seems the little guy generally needs a bit of space to work his unlimited amount of energy. It's less stressful for everyone that way - he gets to be busy and run around, we get to enjoy a decent meal. Win, win. :)

Their pizza came recommended and was raved about, so we had to try just to see what the fuss was about. It was good, wood-fired, hand-made dough,  but to be honest, I was underwhelmed. Am not giving up on this, though - will try some more when we get the chance to go back. We had the pork sausages cooked in red wine and beef cheeks - we were pleased! Dessert was the chocolate mousse and it was a wonderful ending to a great meal.

It's recommended to make a booking as Zonzo can get busy especially during peak hours. Because we went there on a weekend, I had to do it over the phone, and it was done in a jiffy. They require a $50 deposit upon reservation which will be deducted from your total bill. I wasn't too comfortable giving out credit card details the old-school way over the phone (but it had to be done) so hopefully there'd be something online soon.

It was definitely a relaxed and beautiful lunch - wonderful view, great date, and good wine/food.

There was a bit spontaneity during this roadtrip - because we felt we have a few hours left before heading back, we decided to go to Yering Station. I love that we still have a bit of flexibility and spontaneity even with a toddler in tow and how I have an ever supportive husband ready to take on anything.

Yering Station boasts of history - being the oldest vineyard in the state. It's always been on the list at the back of my mind when it comes to Yarra but had remained elusive until now.

The stone and brick structures awed me in Yering - and the view of the valley was vast! J and I headed to the cellar for wine tasting with Jaden in the pram, haha, that's how we roll!

After learning about the wine firsthand, we grabbed a couple bottles to go and then it was time to call it day.
